GLADYS VIRGINIA SASSER

GLADYS WAS BORN IN 1913 TO WILLIAM AND MAUDIE FORRESTER. SHE WAS BORN IN BLAINE BOTTOMS. GLADYS WAS ONE OF NINE SIBLINGS. SHE HAD THREE BROTHERS AND FIVE SISTERS. TRAGEDY WOULD  STRIKE GLADYS LIFE AT A YOUNG AGE. AT THE AGE OF THREE SHE LOST HER MOTHER TO AN UNKNOWN ILLNESS. THIS WOULD LEAVE HER FATHER WILLIAM AND GLADYS OLDER SISTERS, BUNA (BECKY) AND JEWEL TO CARE FOR HER. GLADYS STAYED WITH HER FATHER  AND OLDER SISTERS THROUGH HER YOUNGER YEARS. SHE ATTENDED STAR SCHOOL AND GRADUATED FROM THE 8TH GRADE. SHE SPENT HER SATURDAYS SQUARE DANCING. HER AND HER OLDER SISTER BECKY ONLY HAD ONE DRESS AND ONE PAIR OF SLIPPERS BETWEEN THEM SO THEY SHARED THEM TAKING TURNS GOING ON SATURDAYS. GLADYS LAUGHED AND TOLD ME HOW SHE WOULD ALWAYS TELL BECKY NOT TO DANCE VERY MUCH SO SHE DIDNT WEAR THEIR SLIPPERS OUT.

GLADYS MET THE LOVE OF HER LIFE AT THESE DANCES. SHE WAS TOLD BY A FRIEND THAT  A YOUNG MAN NAMED BABE SASSER HAD INQUIRED ABOUT HER AND HAD MADE THE STATEMENT THAT SHE WAS THE PRETTIEST GIRL HE HAD EVER SEEN AND HE WOULD MARRY HER SOMEDAY. SEVERAL MONTHS LATER GLADYS MET HER ADMIRER FACE TO FACE. BABE INTRODUCED HIMSELF AND ASKED IF SHE WAS GOING WITH ANYONE. GLADYS TOLD HIM WHO HER CURRENT BOYFRIEND WAS . BABE BOLDLY TOLD HER THAT “HE WOULD BE RUNNING THAT LITTLE BIRD OFF!”. GLADYS WITH A SMILE ON HER FACE AND A SPARKLE IN HER EYE SEEMED TO DRIFT BACK IN TIME WHEN TALKING ABOUT BABE. BABE WALKED GLADYS HOME THAT NIGHT TO HER SISTER BECKYS HOME WHERE THEY STAYED ON THE PORCH TALKING, LAUGHING AND FALLING IN LOVE. OUT OF ALL THE MEMORIES THAT  GLADYS HAS MADE IN HER ONE HUNDRED YEARS SHE STILL SAYS THIS IS HER FAVORITE MEMORY OF BABE. SHE ALSO RECALLED  HOW BABE ALWAYS CALLED HER GLAD, HE NEVER REFERRED TO HER AS GLADYS.

GLADYS AND BABE GOT MARRIED ON 12/25/33 THEY MADE THEIR HOME IN BLAINE BOTTOM FOR ABOUT THREE MONTHS THEN THEY MOVED TO THE SEMINOLE AND WEWOKA AREA WHERE BABE GOT A JOB WITH MAGNOLIA OIL COMPANY WHICH IS NOW KNOWN AS  EXXON MOBIL. THIS WOULD BEGIN GLADYS AND BABES FIRST ADVENTURE IN THEIR YOUNG LIFE. FOR BABE TO GET THIS JOB IT WOULD REQUIRE A TRIP ON A TRAIN, A FREIGHT TRAIN  IN THIS CASE. THEY CAUGHT A TRAIN IN SEMINOLE AND RODE IT TO ADA. IN ADA BABE AND GLADYS HAD TO JUMP FROM THE TRAIN TO GET TO THE PLACE WHERE THEY NEEDED TO BE. GLADYS WAS VERY SCARED BUT BABE WASNT AND SHE WAS GOING WHEREVER HE WENT. SO THEY JUMPED OFF THE FREIGHT TRAIN IN ADA. GLADYS HAS TOLD THIS STORY MANY TIMES TO HER FAMILY AND IT STILL BRINGS A SMILE TO HER FACE.

GLADYS AND BABE WOULD MOVE SEVERAL TIMES IN THE FOLLOWING YEARS FROM WEWOKA TO ILLINOIS TO TEXAS THEN LOUISIANA. BABE WORKED AT EXXON WHILE GLADYS BECAME A HOUSEWIFE AND SEAMSTRESS AND MASTERED PLAYING THE PIANO. GLADYS MADE CLOTHES FOR THE WHOLE FAMILY AND WOULD MAIL THEM HOME TO THEM. IN 1960 BABE DECIDED HE WAS READY TO RETIRE FROM THE OIL FIELD BUSINESS. THEY MOVED TO STIGLER AND THIS IS WERE THEY SPENT THEIR FINAL YEARS TOGETHER. BABE BECAME JUSTICE OF THE PEACE AND ALSO OPENED A DOMINO PARLOR NEXT DOOR TO HIS HOME. GLADYS CONTINUED TO BE A HOUSEWIFE, SHE GOT SAVED AND BECAME A MEMBER OF THE STAR BAPTIST CHURCH, A VERY LOYAL MEMBER THAT SELDOM MISSED. GLADYS CONTINUES TO BE A MEMBER OF STAR BAPTIST CHURCH AND ATTENDS SERVICES ON A REGULAR BASIS.

GLADYS AND BABE COULD NOT HAVE CHILDREN OF THEIR OWN. GLADYS RECALLED HOW BABE BROUGHT A SMALL GIRL NAMED HELEN HOME FROM THE COURTHOUSE ONE DAY. SHE WAS THREE YEARS OLD THEY KEPT HER ABOUT 8 MONTHS AND WANTED TO ADOPT HER, BUT UNFORTUNATELY IT DIDNT WORK OUT. GLADYS TOLD ME SHE WOULD HAVE LIKED TO HAVE HAD SIX CHILDREN.

GLADYS LOST THE LOVE OF HER LIFE IN 1974. WITHIN TWO YEARS HER OLDER SISTERS BECKY AND JEWEL, WHICH HELPED RAISE HER LOST THEIR SPOUSES AS WELL. THE THREE BECAME INSEPERABLE, GLADYS WAS THE ONLY ONE THAT COULD DRIVE SO SHE DROVE THEM TO CHURCH EVERY WEDNESDAY AND SUNDAY.

GLADYS MOVED TO KEOTA IN 2001 AFTER THE LOSS OF HER SISTER BECKY TO BE CLOSER TO HER FAMILY. GLADYS REMAINS IN KEOTA TODAY. SHE IS A VERY GOOD HISTORIAN SHARING HER MEMORIES WITH HER FAMILY. SHE STILL GRIEVES FOR HER LOVE, BABE. GLADYS IS A BEAUTIFUL LADY, VERY LOVED AND RESPECTED BY HER FAMILY AND COMMUNITY. HER FAMILY RECALLS WHAT AN EXCELLENT COOK AND SEAMSTRESS GLADYS HAS ALWAYS BEEN. SHE  IS A VERY LOYAL AND DEVOTED CHRISTIAN.
